Self-awareness: An introduction
Have you ever stopped to think...
About how well you really know yourself? 🤔
How you think, feel, behave and act?
Your core-values, your beliefs, emotional triggers and responses, the people you gravitate towards and why?
Self-awareness is like shining a light on your inner world, illuminating your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. ✨

What is Self-Awareness? 🤔
Self-awareness is the ability to turn your attention inward and examine your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It's like having an inner mirror that reflects your true-authentic-self. 🪞
However, uncovering your true-authentic-self can be challenging! Often, we subconsciously assimilate the beliefs, thoughts and behaviours of those around us. i.e. those whom we've spent most of our lives with up to that point. So understanding self, can be a process of unravelling who we thought we were, to explore and discover who we actually are!
Self-awareness is fundamental to Self-Mastery, a foundational pillar of personal growth and a key ingredient for living your potential through a more fulfilling life.
It's an ever evolving cycle for understanding your strengths and weaknesses; and what we at lifeprint.fit collectively term your: Personal-attributes (i.e. your thoughts, core-values, beliefs, biases, emotions, experiences, life-challenges, behaviours).
All of which contribute to determining how you perceive yourself within the world and how you interact with the world around you.
However, self-awareness is more than just introspection. It's also about understanding how others perceive you.
Three questions to ponder:
Are you truly aware of the impact you have on others?
Are they positive impacts? 🤔
Have you considered how your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, actions and words affect those around you?

The Two Sides of Self-Awareness ☯️
Self-awareness has two main components:

- Internal self-awareness: This is about understanding your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It's about knowing your values, your strengths, and your weaknesses. 💪
- External self-awareness: This is about understanding how others perceive you. It's about being able to see yourself through the eyes of others and understand how your actions and words affect them. 🤝

Why is Self-Awareness Important? 🤔
Think of Self-awareness as a superpower! ✨ At lifeprint.fit, through years of Self-Mastery coaching we understand that Self-awareness makes up an essential part of your BEING & who you are.
Cultivating your Self-awareness can help you:
Cultivating your Self-awareness can help you:
- Make better decisions: When you understand your values and motivations, you can make choices that align with your authentic self. 😊
Research suggests that individuals with higher self-awareness are more likely to make choices congruent with their values and long-term goals (Sheldon & Kasser, 1998). - Build stronger relationships: By understanding how others perceive you, you can communicate more effectively and build deeper connections. ❤️
A study by Eurich (2018) found that individuals with greater external self-awareness (understanding how others see them), had stronger relationships and were more likely to be seen as leaders. - Improve your performance: Self-awareness allows you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, so you can focus on areas for growth and development. 💪
Research has shown that self-awareness is a key predictor of job performance and is associated with higher levels of productivity and success (Sutton, 2016). - Increase your self-esteem: When you know and accept yourself, flaws and all, you can build greater self-confidence and self-worth. 💖
Studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between self-awareness and self-esteem, with individuals who have a clearer understanding of themselves reporting higher levels of self-worth (Silvia & O'Brien, 2004). - Boost your well-being: Self-awareness can help you manage stress, regulate your emotions, and cultivate greater resilience. 😌
Research indicates that self-awareness is a crucial component of emotional intelligence and plays a significant role in managing stress, coping with challenges, and maintaining a positive mood (Goleman, 1998). - Improve empathy & communication with others: By understanding your personal attributes (thoughts, core values, beliefs, biases, emotions, emotional triggers, behaviours). 💪
A recent study by Schlegel et al. (2015) found that individuals with higher levels of self-awareness demonstrated greater empathy and more effective communication skills in interpersonal interactions. With empathy and new perspectives linked to improved communication, stronger relationships, and greater cooperation (Davis, 1983).
Self-Awareness and Critical Thinking 🧠
Self-awareness is also a crucial ingredient for critical thinking. When you're aware of your own biases and assumptions, you can approach information more objectively and make more informed decisions.
Think about it:
Have you ever made a decision based on a gut feeling, only to realize later that you were influenced by your own biases? 🤔
We all have biases, but self-awareness allows us to recognize them and make more conscious choices.
Research has shown that self-awareness is positively correlated with critical thinking skills (Facione, 2011). When we're more aware of our own thought processes, we're better able to analyze information, evaluate evidence, and form our own conclusions.
